Introduction
A number of the editions of Microsoft Windows 7 and Windows Vista come with the so called
Media Center application, which allows you to use your PC as a digital media
center: you can watch TV, record TV shows, play videos, watch your digital
photos and listen to music.
But wouldn't it be nice if you could also use it to see who’s calling, every
time you receive a phone call?
So what do you need Vista Caller ID for?
With Vista Caller ID you can let that PC that has a connection to
your fixed telephony system, act as a server. This server will send notifications of
incoming telephone calls over the network, to other PC's.
By installing the Vista Caller ID Client for Windows Media Center on your Media Center PC, it will show a
notification every time you receive a telephone call.
Another option is to install the Caller ID client for Windows, which works outside
the Media Center as a regular Windows application.
But there’s more. With Vista Caller ID you'll not only see the
telephone number of the person who’s calling. By making use of the Contacts
information stored in Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange, you'll also see the name and even a
picture of the caller.
See the manual for the
details.
What's in a name...
Don't be fooled by the name of this application!
It sounds as if Vista Caller ID only runs on PC's with Windows Vista, but that's
not true:
- The Media Center client runs on both Windows 7
and Windows Vista.
- The Server application and the regular Client application run on
Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows
XP and Windows Server.
